Turk Wendell's baseball career began when he was drafted in 1988 as a 5th round pick by the Atlanta Braves. After three years with the Braves, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs and made his Major League Baseball debut in 1993.
After his tenure with the Cubs, he then moved on to a career with the New York Mets in 1997. An integral part of the team, he played in the 1999 National League Division Series Playoffs and the National League Championship Series.
In 2000, Turk played with the Mets in the Subway World Series against the New York Yankees, and finished 2nd for Major League Baseball's "Man of the Year" award. He was also nominated for Major League Baseball's Branch Rickey award. Turk has been a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies (#13) since 2001.
Turk Wendell can be categorized as an all-around sportsman. "I began hunting at age 8," says Turk. "I'm game for any type of outdoor activities, especially shed antler hunting, fishing, photography, golf, camping, hiking, skiing, target shooting, and riding ATVs."
Turk has been on hunting trips in over 19 states and Canada. "My favorite hunting trips were to Iowa, Alaska, and Canada. I'd have to say the most memorable was when I bagged a Mountain Lion. I like hunting with a shotgun, rifle, muzzle loader, compound bow, recurve, and longbow. My favorite is a longbow, .223 Weatherby Varmit Master.
"I've bagged over 100 whitetail deer, mule deer, fallow deer, bison, moose, elk, bear, Russian boar, javalenia, mountain lion, turkey, and antelope. On small game and bird hunts, I've bagged coyote; fox; cottontail and snowshoe rabbit; ruffed and prairie grouse; pheasant; chuckker; gamble and bobwhite quail; woodcock; ducks; Canadian geese; and prairie dogs. I'd have to say my favorite is bow hunting whitetail, and varmint hunting."
An avid fisherman, Turk has caught an amazing collection of trophy fish, including a 40-lb. Striper Bass, 9.2-lb. Large Mouth Bass, a 10-lb. Northern Pike, 29-lb. Blue Fin Tuna, 6-lb. Lake Trout, 14" Blue Gill, and a 16" Yellow Perch. "My pick out of this bunch is the Large Mouth Bass," says Turk.
