Tips from the Experts
Larry Weishuhn is a professional wildlife biologist who has worked extensively with whitetail deer and other big game species. Because of his well-known work in research, management, hunting, and whitetail promotion, he is nationally known as "Mr. Whitetail."

"As a matter of fact, I got my first BB gun, a Daisy Red Ryder, on my third birthday," said Larry. "I started hunting deer when I was about six. I shot my first deer in 1961 with my maternal grandfather's single-barrel 12- gauge. As soon as I took that shot," continues Larry, "I broke the old gun open to reload. But in doing so I tugged too hard on the fore end, disengaging the barrel, which fell about 30 feet to the ground below."

"Well," notes Larry, "that left me sitting in my tree with the fore end in one hand, the butt stock in the other, a loaded buckshot shell in my mouth, and the barrel stuck in the mud 30 feet below! That was quite an extraordinary way to begin a hunting career."

Since then, Larry has built and expanded his hunting and outdoor writing career to include television. "Hunting the World with Larry Weishuhn" on the Outdoor Channel is an authentic hunting show that concentrates on big game animals. About half the shows are devoted to some of the leading whitetail deer hunting locations. During the season, the show also features at least two elk hunts.

The show features a Management segment, too. This portion of the show is devoted to the animal and the locale where the hunt takes place. The 3-minute part will explore what is being done to manage habitat and the animals as well as present information viewers can use in their own immediate area to improve habitat for targeted game species as well as all wildlife.

"It is my philosophy," muses Larry, "that there are only two sports--hunting and fishing. Anything you play with a ball or a stick while not carrying a gun or fishing rod is only a game, not a SPORT!"
