Tips from the Experts
"I'm always surprised when I hear people talk about how Buck Knives got its name. And I have to laugh because that is our family name." Those are the words of Chuck Buck, the gregarious chairman of Buck Knives.

"They know the brand name; it's such a natural," he says. "They think that because our first knives were hunting knives we logically named them Buck."

Hoyt Buck made his first knife in 1902. He was followed by his son Al; and today the third and fourth generations of the Buck family -- Chuck and C.J. -- head the renowned knife making firm in El Cajon, California, where they make not just hunting knives, but knives for every imaginable use. C.J. Buck, President and CEO, is an avid outdoorsman and experienced hunter who puts his outdoor knowledge to good use by personally field testing new knives as they are developed.

Why are Buck knives better?

Buck knives benefit from nearly 100 years of knife making experience. The company concentrates on building attractive knives, finished at great expense to a bright luster, using only top-grade steel for the blades to satisfy the serious knife user.

To achieve this, all materials must be of top quality; and the fit and form of each knife must be flawless. Buck Knives continues this tradition because they want their customers to remain customers for life. And that's why they back their products with a generous Lifetime Warranty.

What was the first Buck knife?

The first Buck knives made, just after the turn of the century, were fixed blades. It is unknown what the very first one looked like, however we believe that it was probably very functional, and a little bit ugly.

According to C.J. Buck, "I know my great grandfather's favorite knife was the model that eventually became known as our #118, The Personal. It was named that because it was Hoyt's personal favorite." Describing the early version of The Personal, "It was small, sleek, and very versatile. It was equally at home with both big and small game, and it worked well with fish. I would bet that Hoyt's first knife was a crude version of that knife."
